Teach-and-playback welding robots are widely and effectively utilized today in the automotive and other industries where large batches are manufactured. This type of welding robot is used to best effect in performing fairly simple single-pass welding of light gage sheets. Heavy gage plates, on the other hand, require multiple weld passes, making it necessary to specify individual welding conditions and start/end sequences for each pass. An experimental numerically controlled multipass welding system was developed. A description of this system is presented.
