Mechanism of Ductile Fracture in Ferritic Spheroidal-Graphite Cast Iron.

In order to determine the conditions of cavity initiation and growth, causing the ductile fracturing of ferritic spheroidal-graphite cast iron, tensile tests were performed on cylindrical specimens. Numerical calculations by the finite element method revealed the evolution of strains and deformations in these specimens. It is found that cavity initiation occurs when the strain at the interface reaches 600 MPa and that fracturing is controlled by the growth of the cavities.
