The objective of this paper is to introduce a concept of mechanical roof support to the South African Coal Mining Industry when rib pillar extraction is performed in conjunction with continuous miners. In addition to the requirements of safety and roof control, mechanical roof support also fulfills the need for mobility, which is an essential requirement for working in conjunction with modern mining machines. Only basic design parameters will be discussed. More detailed design features can be obtained from manufacturers and design engineers.
