The author outlines the major features relating to the headrace complex for the Dehar power plant, part of stage one of the Beas hydro development currently under construction in northern India. The 13 km-long Dehar headrace tunnel and penstock system begins at a 370 km-capacity balancing reservoir, the pond levels of which fluctuate between el. 842. 47 and 833. 32. The system comprises the headrace tunnel, the surge shaft with a bypass, and the penstocks leading to Dehar power plant, making available a gross head of about 345 m for a 1000 MW power installation.
