Determining an acceptable risk management strategy for Thailand

Guidelines for dam safety have been produced in a number of countries and although similar, they differ between countries relation to climate and prevailing social attitudes to the acceptance of risk. This article considers the challenges of transferring concepts of safety from one country to another with specific reference to experience gained in undertaking a dam safety review for the Srinagarind Dam in Thailand. This review, including condition assessment and study of an efficiency upgrade, was carried out in 1999-2000 by SNC-Lavalin of Canada on behalf of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand and using the safety guidelines of the Canadian Dam Association.
