The Premier Mine kimberlite diatreme is located approximately 32 km east of Pretoria, in the Republic of South Africa. It is the largest of 11 known kimberlites in the area. At least three major and numerous minor intrusions have been recorded within the pipe, all of which are believed to contain diamonds and other mantle derived minerals and xenoliths. In this paper the major element compositions of a suite of inclusions in Premier diamonds are reported. They are evaluated in terms of conditions of formation, compared with the minerals in potential source rocks and discussed with special reference to diamond genesis. 40 refs.
