In high-T; superconducting multilayer structures including superconductor; insulator; and barrier layers; lattice matched insulators with a low dielectric constant E; and a low value of loss tangent tan6 are needed. It is well known that the superconductivity in a cuprate system is very sensitive to the structure; impurities; and oxygen content. In order to fabricate Josephson junctions with high performance for high-speed operation of superconducting circuits; the essential prerequisite is the all-epitaxial structure; smooth surface; and abrupt interface. A number of issues are critical in the insulator layer selection for applications. Besides the consideration of lattice match; chemical compatibility; the difference of thermal expansion coefficients; and dielectric properties; a favorable insulator should also have a sufficiently high oxygen diffusion rate at about 450 OC; permitting oxygen to diffuse through it and into the underlying high-T; layer; Recently; many kinds of substrate materials for growth of YBa2Cu307.g (YBCO) films have been deposited as insulator layers in multilayer structures; such as SrTi03; Manuscript received September 15; 1998.
