The magnitude of the displacement of the heat center was estimated from sulfur impressions and etched templates. The solidification kinetics and the rate of crystallization were determined along first-order dendritic axes. A study was made of the effect of the carbon content in the steel, the rate of secondary cooling, and other factors on the displacement of the heat center. It is shown that by controlling the rate of flow of water onto the upper and lower edges in the secondary cooling zone it is possible to reduce the displacement of the heat center in horizontal continuous casting to zero.
