The corrosion protection offered by chromated zinc deposits was electrochemically studied. The surface structures of the zinc and chromate coatings were studied using optical and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Corrosion performance was studied in situ and the protective nature of the different chromate layers were determined. Unprotected zinc quickly corroded in a chloride medium. Black, green, and yellow chromate films increased the corrosion protection. The corrosion protection of chromated zinc coatings was qualitatively ranked using galvanostatic methods. Corrosion in black, green, and yellow chromate films was observed to start and propagate along cracks within the chromate coatings. Blue chromate films exhibited generalized corrosion.
