After a review of the characteristics of the heat sources utilized in welding, the weldability of stainless steels is discussed and general conclusions are derived concerning the use of heat sources in stainless steel welding. The advantages and limitations of the following welding techniques used for stainless steel welding are then dealt with in detail: TIG and cold wire-aided TIG welding, plasma welding, multicathode TIG welding, and rigidified arc TIG welding.
