摘要
British Railways Research & Development Division investigation into rail welding life described deals with importance of correct square-cut rail gaps, preheating and correct tapping to ensure slag separation. Two processes specified include a short-preheat technique that is shown to be particularly suitable for higher-tensile steels. The site joining, basic principles of thermit rail welding, rail end cutting, preheating and tapping time, surface finishing of welds, and mechanical properties of welds are discussed.
