摘要
With the amount of data stored in the world doubling every two years, organizations are always looking for more cost-effective ways to store and access data. There has been a move to denser and denser magnetic disks and tapes and, in the past few years, optical disks in development is an optical tape recorder that will store 1Tbyte (1000Gbytes) of data per reel of tape is reported. The access time to the terabyte will be an average of 28 seconds, with a worst-case time of 60 seconds. The media cost is only a few dollars per gigabyte, which is an order of magnitude less than for other methods of storing data. The mediums will have an archival life of 20 years or more and a corrected error rate of 10-12.
