The recent strengthening of regulations on wastewater discharge has rendered inadequate the flocculation/sedimentation or flotation method which has been conventionally applied to wastewater treatment. As a result, more sophisticated treatment methods such as the activated sludge, the lime, electrolysis, and the activated carbon adsorption methods are being studied. The incineration method represents one such process and is being actually used or considered for disposing of pulp digestion liquors containing highly concentrated waste materials. The growing tendency today is to burn the sludge produced after treatment by these processes. This paper describes the performance and features of these wastewater treatment methods and incinerators, and cites operational results of actual equipment.
