A numerical representation of wind-excited oscillations in bridges and tall buildings in given. The generally nonlinear equations of motion are formulated with the aid of measured or theoretically derived air load parameters and a structural analysis based on the finite element method. These equations are solved either within the framework of a linearized stability theory through the use of an algebraic stability criterion or in the case of a nonlinear stability study by a numerical integration with respect to time, so that a more accurate analysis of the motion behavior is possible.
