The MERO structure consisting of prefabricated nodes and members was invented by Dr. Max Mengeringhausen in the forties and, apart from other purposes, it has been applied for the manufacture of maintenance platforms for aircraft since the middle of the fifties. The supporting structure as an essential part of the docks is a spaceframe structure, thus a three-dimensional framework. It is shown that the MERO structure is superior to other structures with regard to the construction of maintenance and overhaul docks, especially those for wide-bodied aircraft and offers an interesting alternative to conventional methods of construction as far as hangar buildings are concerned.
