Effect of Molybdenum on the Corrosion Resistance of Austenitic Stainless Steels.

A quantitative study has been made of the effect of 0 to 4% molybdenum on the corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steels. The critical parameters of the polarization curves as well as the necessary depassivation currents in acid media have been determined. The effect of molybdenum was found to be purely kinetic and is observed only in the anodic range where it increases the anodic polarization in the active state and accelerates the formation of a passive film. Possible consequences of the data obtained are discussed.
