The authors have investigated the effect of phosphorus (from 0. 001 to 0. 11%) on the corrosion, principally intercrystalline corrosion, of stainless austenitic steels with different nickel contents (10, 27, and 40%). The effect of phosphorus is attributable to the tendency of phosphorus to segregation at the grain boundaries, leading to the appearance of intercrystalline corrosion of quenched steels. An increase in the quenching temperature heightens the uniformity of the solid solution, reduces segregation of phosphorus, and thus reduces the corrosion rate.
