This paper describes experimental work carried out to determine the phenomena associated with transverse vibration of cylinders of various rectangular, D shape and triangular cross-section. Wake observations behind stationary rectangular cylinders revealed that the variation of the Strouhal number against the side ratio can be divided into three different regions, each region having its own distinct characteristics. Turbulence in the incident flow was found to have no appreciable effect on the vortex-induced oscillation of the cylinders tested.
