INHIBITION OF COPPER CORROSION IN CHLORIDE SOLUTIONS BY HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS.

Results are reported of investigations of the effect of heterocyclic substances structurally connected with 1,2,3-benzotriazole and 2-benzothiazolethiol as inhibitors of the corosion of copper in neutral salt solutions and synthetic seawater. The inhibiting effect was determined by corrosion rate measurements and its mechanism by recording the anodic and cathodic polarization curves on electrodes after different immersion time periods in the solutions. The characteristics of the surface layers were determined by recording the photopotentials with a pulse technique. An attempt was made to correlate the p or n semiconducting properties of the surface layers with the inhibiting efficiencies of the compounds studied.
