The author reports on a visit to Japan to investigate the education of engineers in that country. Some topics discussed are the following: a brief survey of the cultural and historical background of Japan; the state of general education in Japan; favorable cultural factors; on-the-job training for engineers; no-poaching agreement between companies for engineer employees; and lessons learnt for the U. K.
