Research purposes: The construction process of railway engineering is dynamic, and accidents such as collisions between construction machinery and surrounding terrain are extremely easy to occur. However, the existing simulation methods focus on the visual effects of animation and do not take into account the impact of the terrain environment. In order to simulate the real railway construction process in the virtual world and investigate the potential safety hazards in actual construction in advance, this paper proposes a dynamic visual simulation method of railway engineering construction based on virtual geographic environment. Research conclusions: (1) The component-level decomposition and reassembly of the construction site model, as well as the superposition of terrain and image data, provide a virtual geographic environment for the construction process. (2) The joint linkage model of the construction machinery can realize the dynamic simulation of the operation process, thereby simulating the construction method. (3) The decomposition of the construction process and the time-driven display and hidden state control of model components can realize process-level construction process simulation. (4) The method in this paper can display the construction procedures and methods in a virtual geographic environment at multiple scales, and can provide a scientific basis for the investigation of potential safety hazards and the establishment of construction plans. © 2021, Editorial Department of Journal of Railway Engineering Society.
