All aqueous effluents from the bleached kraft pulp mill can be eliminated by recovering and reusing all the water and chemicals required for bleaching. In the effluent-free bleached kraft pulp mill, the pulp is washed in a completely countercurrent fashion from the last washer in the bleach plant to the first brown-stock washer. A substantial portion of the chlorine in chlorination is substituted by chlorine dioxide. All the chlorine dioxide and chlorine for bleaching and the sodium sulfate for pulping chemical makeup is produced by the chlorine dioxide generator-evaporator-crystallizer. The design and the present state of development of the effluent-free mill are discussed.
