ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE LOCATION USING A GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM

摘要
A Global Positioning System (GPS) was tested under field conditions during a reconnaissance survey of Mile Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands. The system was found to work quickly and reliably in all situations where the exposure of open sky was 90% or more. Designed to work on open water, the GPS failed in areas of high and dense vegetation, but as long as a small clearing could be found, the system obtained swift and accurate readings, making it an ideal choice for archaeologist.
