The MCS-48 series of single-chip microcomputers can perform as well as many multiple-chip, 8-bit processors because of a 2. 5- mu s cycle time and a repertoire of 96 instructions. Housed in 40-pin packages, the MCS-48 processors contain a 64 multiplied by 8 RAM data memory, 27 programmable input/output lines, an 8-bit programmable timer/event counter, a clock oscillator and drive, reset and interrupt circuits, and either 0 or 1-k multiplied by 8 bits of ROM or ultraviolet-erasable PROM. The three versions of the processor chip all require just a 5-V supply to operate.
