摘要
Ottoman foreign trade developed rapidly in the 19th century. The origin of this development was the Europe's economical spread. One of the tools of this spread was steam vessels. This spread and pressure was felt more by the sailboats which were the traditional means of Ottoman maritime trade. Rapidly increasing steam vessels in the Ottoman coasts forced the traditional Ottoman maritime trade sailboats-to change. Ottoman maritime trade which was forced to change from sailboats to steam vessels gave different responses to this change. Sometimes reactions increased against foreign boats. Sometimes sailboats tried to survive by doing assistance works of foreign boats. And sometimes they were the subjects in the Ottoman coasts' sovereignty arguments. Turkish Republic tried to take measures in order to carry the economy forward which was taken over with these arguments.
