Cholesterol is the major sterol in silkworm eggs. The eggs of bivoltine ('NB4 D2') race contain more sterols, and greater percentage of them are esterified, that those of the multivoltine ('Mysore pure') race. Diapause increases the sterol levels, whereas the acid-treatment of eggs reduces them.
