摘要：
Multilingualism in Europe sets numerous challenges for legal translation. In the European Union, all official languages are afforded equal status as an expression of democracy. Nonetheless, the language used to define legal concepts is often English, which is - at the same time - the widest spoken language and the less suitable to translate civil law concepts. The "legal English", Developed by the European Institutions is a "neutral or descriptive language", which is associated with a classic civil law background. The paper aims at investigating the problems of legal translation at European level and the development of a "neutral" legal English at European level, which sets particular problems when it comes to translation issues.
