Optical fibres made from heavy metal fluorides have been under development for much of the past decade. There have been significant advances in understanding the fundamental characteristics of these materials. Progress towards achieving low optical losses and in optimizing the design of fluoride fibres for use in long transmission systems is reviewed. © 1990 Chapman and Hall Ltd.
