DIGITAL OPTICAL-TRANSMISSION FOR SHORT DISTANCES USING PLASTIC OPTICAL FIBERS

摘要
The advantages and disadvantages of optical communication systems using plastic optical fibers (POF) based on PMMA and PC are discussed and the limits of span length and bit rate are given. The span length of communication systems with low bit rates is limited because of the high attenuation of POF, whereas the multimode dispersion limits the span length of systems with high bit rates. Experimental results show however that the multimode dispersion values are not as unfavourable as originally expected because of the effect of high modal mixing after a short distance of a few meters.
