摘要
This paper investigates the layout on the front pages of Brazilian newspapers. The theory and methodology used stem from social semiotics and studies in multimodality. Findings suggest that tabloids privilege visual resources and seem not to be concerned with the construction of a critical readership whereas standard papers seem to use a predominantly verbal semiotic structure to foster a critical reading. One of the standard papers, nevertheless, signals a multimodal style with verbal and visual resources used in a balanced way.
