Aim of Setting up a Urodynamics Unit and Practical Applications

The lower urinary tract is composed of the urinary bladder and urethra. The anatomical and functional disorders of these organs cause urinary dysfunction and related symptoms. Because the voiding related symptoms are not specific, it is not always easy to make the proper diagnosis. In patients particularly having both voiding and filling symptoms, urodynamic investigation gives valuable functional information about the urinary bladder and urethra in addition to history, physical examination and endoscopic or radiological evaluations. Urodynamics is a unit for the diagnosis of urinary dysfunction and related disorders. It is related with urology, gynaecology, pediatric urology and nephrology. The aim of the present paper is to explain the function and importance of a urodynamics unit, its related specialities, organisation, equipments and to give recommendations to the departments that are planning to set up a urodynamics unit.
