This paper deals with the 3D electromagnetic modeling of a transformer so as to evaluate eddy current losses in the tank. To achieve this, several numerical methods have been used with two 3D field computation packages. Conventional volume elements have been used as well as shell elements for the modeling of thin conducting regions, and surface elements for the modeling of conducting regions with a reduced skin depth. The results given by these methods with several characteristics of the tank and magnetic core have been compared, and the influence of the characteristics of these two components have been investigated.
