DISPERSION OF ULTRASONIC DATA AS A MEASURE OF HYGROTHERMAL EFFECTS ON FIBER-REINFORCED PLASTIC LAMINATES

In the reported experiments, destructive and non-destructive tests were carried out on three fiber-reinforced plastic composites - glass, carbon and Kevlar reinforced epoxy - under hygrothermal exposure. In all cases good correlation was found between the dispersion of ultrasonic attenuation data (measured by its coefficient of variation) and corresponding average values of strength and attenuation. Accordingy, dispersion may serve as a reliable parameter in non-destructive evaluation for detection and follow-up of hygrothermal degradation in fiber-reinforced laminates.
