The alpha'-FeN phase was prepared by treating Fe powder with NH3/H2 gas mixtures at a temperature of approximately 665-degrees-C followed by a quench to cryogenic temperatures. Conversion of alpha to alpha' to an extent exceeding 85% has been achieved. Alpha''-FeN is produced by treatment of alpha' for approximately 1 to 2 h at 120-150-degrees-C. B(sat) values obtained for alpha'- and alpha''-FeN are 23.5 and 26.6 kG, respectively. The latter corresponds to 2.94mu(B)/Fe atom, a 34% enhancement over that of alpha-Fe.
