CURRENT IDEAS IN KNOWLEDGE-BASE MANAGEMENT-SYSTEMS

An overview is provided of current ideas in knowledge base-management systems (KBMS). The concept of KBMS has arisen from the integration of the fields of database technology and artificial intelligence. Basically, to be termed a KBMS, a system must contain the essential features of both a database management system and a knowledge processing or expert system, namely, the abilities to handle large amounts of information efficiently, to make intelligent inferences from that information, and to provide suitable user interfaces. The continued development of such integrated systems is considered to be highly desirable to enhance the functionality of future products. The paper discusses definition of a KBMS, historical roots of KBMS and KBMS functionality, approaches and future directions. © 1990.
