Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a widely spread disease in Switzerland, which occurs mainly among smokers. The course of disease is often progressive and these chronically ill and often polymorbid patients are dependent on well-organized treatment networks. A networked health policy and medical approach are required so the development of a chronic care model (CCM) for COPD is meaningful. The basis for this is in adopting evidence-based processes. In this article the guidelines about diagnosing and treating COPD and their implementation are outlined. A great variety of treatment options are already available and several innovative projects have been launched to optimize the quality of COPD management.
