An unhappy profession is uncertain of direction, purpose or potential. At such a time, clear, positive, honest and acceptable leadership is required. Who provides this leadership? If it is the British Dental Association, is it the President chairman of Council, or the director/secretary? Could it be the General Dental Council through its chairman? Or the local dental committees? The General Dental Practitioners' Association probably still regards itself as more of a ginger group than an organisation leading the profession. Where is the academic world, the professional societies, the dentists treating patients under the National Health Service and those treating patients under private contract?
