THE EFFECT OF BETA-CAROTIN ON REPRODUCTIVE-PERFORMANCE OF SOWS

摘要：
The effect of an intramuscular injection auf 200 mg beta-carotin on some reproductive items was tested in 20 repetitional periods at a total of 271 gilts and 666 sows. Gilts and sows were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: 1. control, 2. injection 4 days before artifical insemination (a.i.), 3. injection at the day of a.i., 4. injection 7 days after a.i. There was no significant effect on number and weight of piglets born alive. Sows who got the beta-carotin injection at the day of a.i. had 0.4 more piglets per litter and 0.5 kg heavier litters. It can't be excluded, that the effect of beta-carotin was influenced by hormones administered for synchronisation of oestrus.
