Demographic Ageing and Welfare State - (Not) a solvable Challenge?

Demographic ageing and economic globalization processes question the long-term financing of social security system in European welfare states. A comparison of two studies on the consequences of population trends on future social expenditures in Austria shows that demographic ageing will not automatically result in a dramatic increase of the share of social expenditures on GDP. In fact the economic, social and political conditions are playing a major role in that context.
