A STRUCTURED APPROACH TO TRAINING IN DISTRIBUTED CONTROL-SYSTEM MAINTENANCE

This paper describes how a structured training concept was used to train maintenance personnel in distributed control systems. It is based on training performed in Cominco, Trail, British Columbia, Canada. However, the same principles can be used for any industrial training. The DCS was a typical system. The paper will first briefly describe the DCS as installed in the plant. The problems arising from introducing a new instrumentation system will be discussed. Finally, the paper will get into how the training was planned, implemented, and measured in terms of meeting the desired goal. The paper will stress the importance of creating a proper environment for learning. © 1990.
