The Professional Profile of Music Teachers: a Proposal of the Desired Competences for Elementary and Secondary Education

This study seeks to identify the desirable professional competences of music teachers working in primary and secondary education. Through a qualitative methodological process that included a review of specialized literature, two interviews of music teachers working in primary education and another two of music teachers educators at both primary and secondary levels, and a consultation with a specialist in competences, a proposal of the desirable professional competences for these teachers was made. This list was subjected to a validation process overseen by expert judges. Ten competences, organized under three categories, were established: cross-disciplinary, musical and pedagogical and didactic competences. These competences seek to provide common benchmarks that can serve as a guide for educational institutions, teacher educators or for teachers themselves. Although the list of competences pretends to draw the professional profile of music teachers, this study discusses how this proposal could be extrapolated to other teachers working in primary and secondary education.
