TREATMENT WITH POLYMERS OF WASTE-WATERS FROM FOOD-INDUSTRY

From the manufacture of starch having as raw materials maize beans, result waste waters with an acidic character result. As these waste waters contain varying contamination degrees, mainly carbohydrates and proteins, they are normally unacceptable for direct discharge in the rivers or to on-site biological treatment plant. This paper describes the treatment strategies of these efluents using polymers containing ionogenic groups that are called polyelectrolytes. The treatment schemes are described and the obtained results will be discussed.
