FRACTIONATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS OF LACTOBACILLI CELL-WALLS

摘要
From lysozyme and N-acetylmuramidase hydrolysates of the N-acetylated cell walls of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus B5b, B6 and L. acidophilus JCM 5342, polysaccharide fractions and teichoic acid fractions were isolated by ion-exchange chromatography. The former fractions from B5b and B6 were composed mainly of galactose with a small amount of peptidoglycan constituents. A corresponding fraction from the JCM 5342 cell wall containing a high amount of galactose was not obtained. The teichoic acid fractions from B5b, B6 and JCM 5342 were composed of galactose, glucose, glycerol and phosphorus with a small amount of peptidoglycan constituents which suggest the presence of glycerol type teichoic acid in the 3 strains. It is still uncertain whether such features in the cell wall fractions are common in the 2 species.
