Papillary cancer of the thyroid is an indolent tumor. Its incidence, prevalence, and management are discussed in detail. The surgical treatment is controversial. The arguments made by the proponents of lobectomy and by those in favor of total thyroidectomy are presented as are the authors' recommendations for surgical strategy in confirmed papillary cancer.
