ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SOME AVIAN VIRUSES FROM OVARIES OF DOMESTIC-FOWL

Ovaries of domestic birds showing salpingitis and oophoritis, and belonging to flocks with egg-drop problems were used for the isolation of avian adenovirus and infectious bronchitis (1B) virus. Six isolates of adenovirus and 1 isolate of 1B virus were isolated from 75 ovary samples. These were identified as such on the basis of chicken embryo lesions, hemagglutination and agar gel precipitation tests. Of the 7 isolates, 2 adenovirus and 1 1B virus were characterized further with regard to nucleic acid type and stability to heat, pH, chloroform, ether and trypsin.
