x(2LiCl).y(Li2O).(100-x-y)P2O5 and xAl(2)O(3).y(2LiCl).(100-x-y)P2O5 glasses were obtained for y greater than or equal to 40 mol%, and showed high ionic conduction, for example, log sigma(120 degrees C) (S/cm)= -3.58. This high conductivity was caused by the introduction of Cl- anions and amphoteric oxide (Al2O3). The proposed explanation is that the elastic strain energy, Delta H-s, decreases when large Cl- ions are introduced and the open structure that results is favorable for migration of Li+ ions.
