Medical therapy is often emphasized as appropriate management for sternoclavicular joint septic arthritis, particularly early in the course of the disease. The authors' experience and literature review indicate that medical management alone is frequently associated with therapeutic failure. Five cases are reviewed in which surgical debridement, including resection of the proximal clavicle, were required to achieve cure.
