Marine biotechnology today is at a crossroads. On the one hand, it is likely to prosper together with other areas of biotechnology. If, in addition, the US Government decides to enhance its oceans program, marine biotechnology might be twice blessed. Further, several states have decided to encourage it because its applications will have beneficial economic effects at the local and state levels. The convergence of federal and state efforts could result in a golden age for that area of biotechnology. On the other hand, the relationship between industry and marine biotechnology research institutions is weak. Unless industry recognizes that it is in its interest to support marine biotechnology R & D, and takes steps to do so, the remarkable growth that has taken place in other areas of biotechnology will not be repeated in this field.
