A two-dimensional finite element model is presented to obtain numerical results of displacements and stresses around the crack tip of a rectangular structural steel plate with a sharp edge crack for the linear elastic situation of loadings. The effect of singularity near the crack tip is overcome by collapsing 12-noded cubic isoparametric elements into triangular elements in the crack tip region. Results obtained using the two-dimensional finite element model have shown that near convergence is achieved by using a mesh arrangement having 72 elements and 397 nodes. The variation of displacements and stresses around the crack tip is presented.
