An erbium fiber based external cavity semiconductor laser was shown to represent a significant enhancement over standard undoped fiber external cavity lasers. The self-stabilizing impacts of spatial hole burning in the Er3+ fibers permitted long cavities to be fabricated without inflicting severe penalties in single mode stability, thus allowing very narrow linewidths to be readily obtained. Along with the known advantages of fiber Bragg gratings to be developed to close wavelength tolerances, this advance presented appealing possibilities for realizing great numbers of stable compact single frequency lasers at certain wavelengths for WDM applications.
